About Waterbirth international
For more than 35 years, Waterbirth International has been at the forefront of a global movement to make birth gentler, safer, and more empowering for families and birth professionals alike.
Founded in 1988 by Barbara Harper, Waterbirth International has helped introduce and integrate waterbirth into hospitals, birth centers, and home birth practices across six continents in 80 countries around the world.
Through education, advocacy, and hands-on training, WBI has supported thousands of midwives, nurses, doctors, and parents in understanding the profound benefits of water immersion for labor and birth.
More than just an organization, Waterbirth International is a community and a catalyst for change. WBI’s comprehensive courses, workshops, and global outreach efforts ensure that birth professionals everywhere have access to evidence-based education and the skills needed to support waterbirth safely.
As the demand for gentle, physiological birth grows, Waterbirth International remains committed to its mission: to educate, inspire, and expand access to this transformative birthing option—because every baby deserves a peaceful beginning, and every mother deserves to feel safe, supported, and respected.
WHAT WE DO
Waterbirth International is more than just an organization—it is a movement to transform maternity care worldwide. The organization is committed to supporting birth professionals, educating families, and ensuring water birth remains an accessible, evidence-based option in every setting.
Our Mission
At Waterbirth International, the mission is simple but profound:
To ensure that every baby has the opportunity for a gentle water-supported birth.
Through education, research, and hands-on training, we equip birth care professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to safely support water birth in a variety of settings.
The Beginnings of WBI
Barbara Harper’s journey to founding Waterbirth International was deeply personal. As a nurse, midwife, doula, and childbirth educator, she witnessed firsthand how standard hospital practices often disrupted the natural process of birth. She saw that many interventions, though well-intentioned, left birthing parents feeling disempowered, disconnected, and unsupported.
Her perspective shifted profoundly when she experienced her own warm water immersion during labor with her son. Inspired by the physiology of birth, traditional midwifery wisdom, and emerging research, Barbara traveled the world to learn from cultures that honored birth as a sacred, physiological event—not a medical emergency. She studied in Russia, France, and across Europe, where pioneers like Dr. Michel Odent were reintroducing water birth into hospital settings.
In 1988, she founded Waterbirth International with a clear mission:
✔️ To educate birth professionals on the science and safety of water birth
✔️ To advocate for water birth integration in hospitals and maternity care
✔️ To empower families with knowledge and options for gentle, evidence-based birth
At the heart of Barbara’s philosophy is the belief that “Birth should be undisturbed, supported, and deeply respectful of the mother-baby connection.” Water, she discovered, was a simple yet powerful tool that helped reduce pain, promote relaxation, and allow for physiological, instinctual birth.
