Courses For Parents

SELF PACED ONLINE

Coming soon!

Waterbirth International will be offering self paced video courses of interest to parents considering waterbirth. They will cover such topics as:

This session will focus on why it is vital from both the baby’s and the mother’s perspective to achieve a natural normal vaginal birth experience, as well as the importance of protecting the first hour after birth. This lecture expands the knowledge base of the nurse, physician and childbirth educator using the latest physiological and psychological research to support the rationales for natural undisturbed birth. This session illustrates the Gentle Birth Principals and Practices that Support Normal Birth, including the role of the doula and the use of warm water immersion during labor and birth. The session will explore issues of prenatal and perinatal psychology and bonding and the life long effects on the human psyche.

Gentle Birth is an evidence-based model of maternity care, developed by practitioners worldwide which incorporates current research on the psycho-neuro-physiology of the mother/baby pair and the consciousness of the fetus/newborn in its care practices.

Gentle Birth employs wellness promotion, integrative health care modalities, and responsiveness to the unique physiology unfolding in the mother and baby in all aspects of perinatal care, and follows the dictum, “First, Do No Harm” when considering any intervention.

Rooted in a strong sense of “pure service,” Gentle Birth practitioners place the physical, psychological, and emotional well being of the mother-infant pair, above all other system considerations and they uphold the right of childbearing women to exercise full autonomy in their care decisions.

Waterbirth is more than a fad or trend – it is evidence-based practice in hospitals, birth centers and home birth throughout the world. Spending most or all of labor in water eases discomfort and creates a gentler birth process. The benefits of warm water immersion in labor and birth have been studied in many countries for over three decades. This course will explain why to integrate water immersion as a comfort measure option during childbirth and highlight the benefits of waterbirth as part of a gentle birth approach to maternity care. Special emphasis is given on newborn transitional physiology, the latest research, the impact of the ACOG opinion and we’ll discuss the Seven Secrets of Successful Waterbirth which include: Mobility, Intimacy, Safety, Research, Confidence, Consciousness and Fetal and Newborn Capabilities.

In 1996, the World Health Organization called for the elimination of unnecessary intervention in childbirth, yet hospitals throughout the world are creating more and more technological approaches to birth. By applying and integrating the principles and practices of Gentle Birth, maternity care systems in any country can achieve safe, healthy, and normal physiologic childbirth. This workshop will assist maternity care providers and their birthing families with the tools to protect, promote, support and respect the innate childbearing process and avoid overuse of interventions, thus achieving better care, better health, and lower costs.

When we acknowledge that the baby is a conscious participant during birth and immediately postpartum and has one opportunity to accomplish time sequenced specific tasks, will our birth practices be different? Evidence is presented demonstrating the psychological, physiological and neurological milestones in human development that are supported or hindered by common birth and postpartum practices.

This session will help us “rethink” birth from this biophysiologic perspective and examine core beliefs.

This workshop offers participants the opportunity to develop mindfulness meditation, which has been proven to assist care givers in creating a peaceful birth environment. Mindfulness is an awareness that results from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment with a sense of connection. It is most often used for reducing stress and promoting self-care, but can also be an enhancement for work place satisfaction and prevention of burn-out. When mindfulness is integrated into maternity care, the practitioner “holds space” for the birthing mother and baby to unfold in their own time, in their own way. Exercises, deep relaxation, affirmations and an exploration of our own birth issues helps the participant identify and readjust their core beliefs about birth and life. The care provider can also teach these simple techniques to their clients.

Birth is more than we can see or feel. Acknowledging that there is a governing force beyond the physical modifies how we define risk. This workshop explores normal physiological birth processes and the timed sequenced behavior of the fetus/newborn. Interwoven throughout the workshop are scriptural and prophetic writings that support or describe the mother’s ability to give birth without intervention or interference. Current research and thoughts on brain chemistry and the development of the soul will be reviewed.
